Where does a tip go after the client pays?
Straight to the technicians on the ticket. GetSpaPOS records the tip with the payment, splits it by the rule you picked, adds each share to that technician's tip total for the day, and carries it into payroll. The salon's share is zero, and the split is visible on the ticket forever.

What the law says about salon tips
The U.S. Department of Labor says tips are the property of the employee, and an employer may not keep them, including managers and supervisors (Fact Sheet #15). Tip pools have their own rules. States can be stricter: some ban deducting card fees from tips entirely.

Tip questions from the front desk.

Salon ownerHow does salon tip splitting work?
GetSpaPOSWhen more than one technician works on a client, the tip on that ticket is divided between them. GetSpaPOS can split it by each person's share of the service total, evenly, or by amounts you type. Each technician's share is recorded on the ticket and in their payroll.
-
Salon ownerDoes the owner or the salon keep any part of the tip?
GetSpaPOSNo. In GetSpaPOS the tip goes to the technicians on the ticket and the salon share is zero. Under the federal FLSA, tips belong to the employee, and employers and managers may not keep them. Some states add their own rules.
-
Salon ownerCan a client tip on the card after signing?
GetSpaPOSYes. A tip can be added at payment or added to the ticket afterwards, and it is split the same way. If you take card tips through your processor, the amount still lands on the right technician.
-
Salon ownerWhat about cash tips?
GetSpaPOSCash tips handed straight to the technician never touch the register. If the client leaves cash at the desk for someone, the front desk can record it on the ticket so it shows in that technician's tip total.
-
Salon ownerCan I take the card processing fee out of tips?
GetSpaPOSFederally, the U.S. Department of Labor has allowed deducting the processing cost on the tip portion only, as long as pay stays above minimum wage. Some states restrict or ban it, and Texas requires written authorization. GetSpaPOS can record a deduction, but check your state before you take one.
-
Salon ownerCan tips be paid out daily?
GetSpaPOSYes. Many salons pay card tips in cash at close. The close-out report shows each technician's tips for the day, so the cash drawer and the payout match. Others pay tips with the weekly payroll.
-
Salon ownerDoes the tip count toward commission?
GetSpaPOSNo. Commission is calculated on the service price. Tips are added on top, in full, and shown separately on the technician's pay breakdown.
-
Salon ownerWhat happens to the tip if the service is refunded?
GetSpaPOSYou decide. The tip can stay with the technician (common when the client was unhappy with the product, not the work) or be refunded with the service. The change is recorded so payroll stays correct.
-
Salon ownerDo technicians see their tips?
GetSpaPOSYes. Each technician sees their own tips per ticket and per period. They cannot see anyone else's.
-
Salon ownerIs this tax advice?
GetSpaPOSNo. Tips are taxable income and have reporting rules for employers and employees. GetSpaPOS gives you accurate records; your accountant tells you what to file.
