What does nail technician commission software actually do?

It turns every ticket into a payroll line. The software knows who did each service, applies that technician's commission rate, keeps tips separate and whole, and totals it all for the pay period, so nobody has to rebuild the week from receipts on Sunday night.

Commission ranges: Zenoti salon commission guide, checked October 2026.

Commission rules you can set

  • Per technician40% for a new tech, 60% for a senior. Change it the day someone levels up.
  • Per serviceA flat amount for a polish change, a percentage on everything else.
  • Product commissionPay a separate rate on retail the tech sells, or none.
  • Invoice or paymentPay on what was billed, or only on what was collected.

A payroll week, start to finish.

This is the real order things happen in GetSpaPOS, from the first ticket of the week to payday.

  1. 1

Every ticket records who did the work

Each service line on a ticket carries the technician who performed it. Two techs on one client? Each line has its own name, so commission is never guessed later.

    At checkout

  2. 2

Commission is worked out line by line

GetSpaPOS applies that technician's rate (or the service's rate) to the line total, after discounts and, if you choose, after product cost. Retail can carry its own product commission.

    Automatic

  3. 3

You review the week in one report

The sales-by-technician report shows each person's total sales, commission and tips for any date range, with every ticket behind the number. Spot a mistake, open the ticket, fix it.

    5 minutes

  4. 4

    Commission lands in payroll

Commission flows into payroll as its own line, next to hours, allowances, deductions and any bonus. You and the technician both see the same breakdown.

    One click

  5. 5

Pay the way you already pay

Record payment in full, in parts or in bulk for the whole team, and note what went by check and what went another way. Your accountant gets a clean export.

Commission, booth rent or hourly: which pay model fits?

Most US nail salons pay commission, many pay a small base plus commission, and some rent booths. GetSpaPOS handles commission and base-plus-commission directly; booth renters can run their own register in the same location.

The tricky tickets, handled.

These are the cases that break spreadsheets. Here is what GetSpaPOS does with each one.

Two techs, one client
Each service line carries its own technician, so a pedicure by Linh and a manicure by Tuan pay out separately. The tip can be split by service value.
Package visits
Visit 3 of 5 credits the technician at the package's per-visit price, not zero and not the full menu price.
Gift card payments
A gift card is a way to pay. The service still earns its normal commission.
Refunds and redos
A refunded line comes off the technician's sales for that period. A free redo can be set to pay nothing, or a flat amount.
Retail on the ticket
Retail can pay its own product commission, so a tech who sells the polish she used is rewarded for it.
Mid-period rate change
A new rate applies from the day you change it. Earlier tickets keep the rate they were sold at.

What GetSpaPOS does not decide for you

Commission software does the math. It does not decide whether your technicians are employees or contractors, whether their pay meets minimum wage and overtime rules in your state, or how payroll taxes are withheld. Those rules differ by state and city. Check them with your accountant or payroll provider, and keep GetSpaPOS's reports as your record of what was earned.

Next: how tips are split and paid

Commission and payroll, asked and answered.

  1. Salon ownerHow does nail technician commission software work?
    GetSpaPOS

It records which technician performed each service, applies that person's commission rate to the service total, and adds the result to payroll automatically. In GetSpaPOS that happens on every ticket, so the weekly payroll is a report you review rather than math you do by hand.

  2. Salon ownerCan different technicians have different commission rates?
    GetSpaPOS

Yes. Each staff member has their own rate, so a new technician can start at 40% and a senior at 60%. You can also set a rate per service when some services pay differently, such as a flat amount for a polish change.

  3. Salon ownerIs commission calculated before or after product cost?
    GetSpaPOS

Your choice. Many salons take a product or supply charge off the service total first and pay commission on the rest. Others pay on the full price. The calculator on this page shows the difference for your numbers.

  4. Salon ownerWhat happens to commission when I give a discount?
    GetSpaPOS

Commission is calculated on what the client actually paid for the service line, after the discount. If you want techs paid on the full menu price for owner-approved discounts, set that service's commission as a flat amount instead.

  5. Salon ownerDoes a refund or voided ticket take the commission back?
    GetSpaPOS

Yes. A refunded or voided line is removed from that technician's sales, so their commission for the period goes down by the same amount, and the report shows the reversal on its own line.

  6. Salon ownerCan I pay part of the commission by check and part another way?
    GetSpaPOS

You can record each payroll payment with its method and amount, including split payments. How you pay staff, and what you report, must follow federal and state payroll and tax rules. Your accountant should confirm your setup.

  7. Salon ownerDo technicians see their own commission?
    GetSpaPOS

Yes. Each technician can sign in and see their own payroll, sales and tips, but not anyone else's. Owners and managers with the right permission see everyone.

  8. Salon ownerCan commission be based on payment received instead of invoice?
    GetSpaPOS

Yes. Commission can follow the invoice value or only the payments actually collected, which suits spas that take deposits or let regulars pay later.

  9. Salon ownerHow are package and gift card visits paid?
    GetSpaPOS

When a client redeems a visit from a prepaid package, the technician is credited for that visit at the package's per-visit value. Gift card redemptions are treated like any other payment, so the service line still earns its normal commission.

  10. Salon ownerDoes GetSpaPOS replace my payroll provider?
    GetSpaPOS

It calculates commission, tips, hours, allowances and deductions and records what you paid. It does not file payroll taxes. Many salons export the totals to their payroll provider or accountant, who handles withholding and filings.
